The Museum Opens in Spring...
...with a two day open house in partnership with other member museums in the Tri-River Museum Network. As part of the network, the Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society creates a special exhibit to fit the annual theme all of the thirty-three museums or organizations in the network agree to present. The Hyser Rivers Museum Open House hours will be the same as all other museums in the Tri-River Historical Museum Network.
The Tri-River Historical Museum Network & Hyser Rivers Museum Open House Hours are the same: 11AM - 5PM Saturday and 1PM - 4PM Sunday. The date changes annually along with our exhibit theme, so watch for announcements on our Facebook page. The two days and extended hours encourage visitors to travel to members of the Tri-River Historical Museum Network located along the Flat, Grand and Thornapple Rivers in Barry, Eaton, Ionia, Kent and Montcalm Counties. Compare the different ways each museum approaches the theme. Pick up a booklet at the Hyser Rivers Museum for a list and description of all the museums with highlights about each of them, along with directions and maps.

American Summer Excitement
The 4th of July Northville Park Association Parade is a well-established tradition that started decades ago! But 2023 was the first year the Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society members participated with a special float and parade stroll. Courtesy of PGRHS Members Tom Briggs and Joan Briggs, known for the loving care they lavish on their 3 thousand pound–plus baby they call, “Mater”! This 1965 one-of-a-kind Chevy truck gets plenty of affection from the public, too, so we were thrilled that Mater was the centerpiece of the first but not the last PGRHS march in the 4th of July Parade!
Fun Continues in the Fall
The second weekend of September the PGRHS traditionally sponsors a visit from Tim Todish, founder and Commander of the Jaeger’s Battalion of Rogers’ Rangers, the oldest and largest French & Indian reenactment unit in the country. Founded in Grand Rapids by John Jaeger and Tim Todish, it has members all over the U.S. and abroad. Todish is a noted historian and author of numerous books he will bring for sale. There will also be displays of trading, trapping, and other early Colonial crafts.

Elite U.S. Army Ranger units today trace their origins back to the 1700s and “Rogers’ Rangers,” named for Robert Ranger, who led a wily guerilla force against the French. So successful in American warfare, the “Roger’s Rules of Ranging” were adapted and have been distributed to every soldier in the U.S. Army Ranger School since the 1950s. The Hyser Rivers Museum is open extra hours from 1-5PM on Sunday. Refreshments will be served along with live music. |
The Warmth of a Traditional Christmas
We were so pleased to welcome over 40 people to our first Annual Very Special Christmas Open House celebration at the Hyser Rivers Museum on the first Sunday in December. We’ll be repeating this event annually, it was so much fun!
When the Open House ended, all in attendance were singing Christmas carols led by Northview High School Varsity Voices Student Conductors Libby Cosby and Rory Morter. It's no surprise that Santa and Mrs. Claus showed up to join in! Santa reminisced about his earlier visits to the Hyser home when Dr. Hyser's children were young. Mrs. Claus shared her memories of helping Santa's elves choose particular toys for Jennie and her brothers -- they are still on display! Santa ended the caroling with a countdown to light the Christmas tree to cheers and applause. Just the way a very special old fashioned Christmas should be! Our thanks to NVHS Choral Director Jack Phillipson and his students for lending their enthusiasm, talent, and lovely voices to our event. |
