On February 22, 2022, Brian DeVries, at that time the President of the Plainfield Charter Township Historical Preservation Advisory Commission (H-PAC), met with newly elected Supervisor Tom Coleman and members of the Plainfield Charter Township Governance Committee: Trustees Sue Morrow, Kathey Batey, and Chair, Superintendent Cameron Van Wyngarden.
Brian was invited to think about separating from the township in order to form a non-profit historical society, one that could design its own program without requiring township approval. At the same time, the historical society would still act to operate the Hyser Rivers Museum.
Shortly after, H-PAC members agreed to transition into a new tax exempt non-profit. We had strong support from the Plainfield Charter Township Trustees, who promised to help us launch successfully with legal and financial assistance.
As new Board members, we took our mission seriously, especially when considering the interests of potential members. After a year of developing new bylaws, operation policies and a list of possible programs, the new Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society took the show on the road, making our very first presentation to members of the Northview Seniors. Several in the audience joined the new historical society on the spot! On March 23, 2023, we held our very first membership meeting at the Plainfield Township Hall.
